Textual Analysis and Representation: Hustle S1 Ep4

This extract is about how class is represented in gender and it shows that richer people are happier and more positive compared to poorer people who might make mistakes and feel vulnerable  

The woman with the blond wig who has real colour hair of black shows that she is hiding her identity. Criminal business is shown between the men when they are discussing business. At the start of the extract we see 3 people in the store foreshadowing what will happen. We see the man working at the store as being represented as being higher class even though he has a job of being a shopkeeper compared to the old woman in red who can’t afford the dress she wants to buy. Over-shoulder shot when the camera looks down at the woman. The shopkeeper makes a joke out of the old woman about here not being able to afford the dress due to her appearance of clothing which shows that he is shallow and judgement. The shopkeeper changes his mood towards the blond woman as he sees her being dressed in rich clothing which shows us that richer class people are treated better then poorer people. Two shot on the men talking about a burglary

The woman pretends she lost her ring in the store and starts to rush around the store to look for it, the camera changes to being a hand-held camera and the camera follows the action as she strolls from one part of the store to another

Even the woman is represented being rich from how she is dressed, she uses weakness to represent her being stereotype and she is also represented as being a scammer in the sequence.

There is sound playing of a trumpet and a cartoonish style of music when the woman starts to search for her ring that she lost.

Two shot when the woman gives the shopkeeper her phone number and she offers him 2000-5000 which also relates that she is represented of being rich

When the woman looks at the camera it breaks the fourth wall and links to comedy which engages the audience to feel as if they are in the sequence

There is a swipe shot when the location changes from the shop to someone sitting on a couch and we see someone trying to disable the alarm but sets it off which causes the camera to have a tilt-up shot to show the expression of the person

Fast pace beat at the start of the sequence, stops when the man talks to the older woman about clothing and starts-off again when he plans to talk to the rich looking woman

Faster beat of sound when the woman starts to look for her ring, and the music stops when the man plans to make a suggestion and tells her and starts to play again when she plans to pay her and leaves

The music continues to play when the men are shown drinking and smoking in a different scene to set a different atmosphere feeling

The music stops when the two men talk seriously about the ring to show the importance of the conversation

The music increases tension between the men as the music plays when they talk about the ring

The Sequence breaks the fourth wall when the man looks at the camera and says what will happen

The scene cuts when the blond woman looks at the retailer and old woman

When the men are talking, they follow the 180* degree rule

Cross-cutting between scenes and has some rapid-cutting marks and also what is happening in the sequence makes the atmosphere feel intense between the characters

During transition there are comic sounds  

Music stops playing during interesting and intense moments and plays during transition

The men in costume jackets seem to be wealthy from their posture and how they communicate

The sequence follows the rule of thirds also by showing the point of interest on the the audience have to concentrate on

The music allows the audience to know that it is a light suspense/comedy  

When the music stops then starts and stops again it tries to exaggerate the comedic awkwardness between the character and the reason of this sequence

In Conclusion the sequence uses a lot of camera shots/angles, the editing is well-done without any gaps which allows the story to flow through-out the sequence. The sequence also represent the society life between the opposite genders, and the sequence shows the rich female character using negative connotations of her advantage which gets rid of the negative cons.
